New shape from Shading methods
1993
Shape from Shading is perhaps the most difficult topic to deal with in Artificial Vision: several researchers have faced it using different approaches. The most part of these methods are based on the Horn algorithm so they require very heavy regularity assumptions about the perceived objects' shape and are computationally expensive.
Automated parametric neutronics analysis of the Helium Cooled Pebble Bed breeder blanket with Be 12 Ti
2017
The Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) breeder blanket is being developed as part of the European Fusion Programme. Part of the programme is to investigate blanket designs relevant for future demonstration fusion power plants. This paper presents neutronics analyses of the HCPB with an alternative neutron multiplier, Be12Ti which is incorporated into the design, replacing the current Be multiplier. A parameter study was performed for a range of geometries to identify the optimal heights of the lithium ceramic and neutron multiplier pebble beds. Automated creation of CAD models followed by conversion to constructive solid geometry (CSG) and unstructured mesh (UM) geometry allows the models to b…
Size of the dark side of the solar neutrino parameter space
2000
We present an analysis of the MSW neutrino oscillation solutions of the solar neutrino problem in the framework of two-neutrino mixing in the enlarged parameter space $(\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}^{2},{\mathrm{tan}}^{2}\ensuremath{\theta})$ with $\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\in}(0,\ensuremath{\pi}/2).$ Recently, it was pointed out that the allowed region of parameters from a fit to the measured total rates can extend to values $\ensuremath{\theta}g~\ensuremath{\pi}/4$ (the so-called ``dark side'') when higher confidence levels are allowed. The purpose of this Rapid Communication is to reanalyze the problem, including all the solar neutrino data available, to discuss the dependence on the stat…
Resolving the octant of theta(23) with T2K and NOvA
2013
Preliminary results of MINOS experiment indicate that theta(23) is not maximal. Global fits to world neutrino data suggest two nearly degenerate solutions for theta(23): one in the lower octant (LO: theta(23) 45 degrees). v(mu) -> v(e) oscillations in superbeam experiments are sensitive to the octant and are capable of resolving this degeneracy. We study the prospects of this resolution by the current T2K and upcoming NOvA experiments. Because of the hierarchy-delta(CP) degeneracy and the octant delta(CP) degeneracy, the impact of hierarchy on octant resolution has to be taken into account. As in the case of hierarchy determination, there exist favorable (unfavorable) values of delta(CP) fo…
Cornering the revamped BMV model with neutrino oscillation data
2017
Using the latest global determination of neutrino oscillation parameters from~\cite{deSalas:2017kay} we examine the status of the simplest revamped version of the BMV (Babu-Ma-Valle) model, proposed in~\cite{Morisi:2013qna}. The model predicts a striking correlation between the "poorly determined" atmospheric angle $\theta_{23}$ and CP phase $\delta_{CP}$, leading to either maximal CP violation or none, depending on the preferred $\theta_{23}$ octants. We determine the allowed BMV parameter regions and compare with the general three-neutrino oscillation scenario. We show that in the BMV model the higher octant is possible only at $99\%$ C.L., a stronger rejection than found in the general c…
Resolving the atmospheric octant by an improved measurement of the reactor angle
2017
Taking into account the current global information on neutrino oscillation parameters we forecast the capabilities of future long baseline experiments such as DUNE and T2HK in settling the atmospheric octant puzzle. We find that a good measurement of the reactor angle $\theta_{13}$ plays a key role in fixing the octant of the atmospheric angle $\theta_{23}$ with such future accelerator neutrino studies.
Determination of the $\theta_{23}$ octant in LBNO
2014
According to the recent results of the neutrino oscillation experiment MINOS, the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{23}$ may not be maximal ($45^{\circ}$). Two nearly degenerate solutions are possible, one in the lower octant (LO) where $\theta_{23}45^{\circ}$. Long baseline experiments measuring the $\nu_{\mu}\rightarrow\nu_{e}$ are capable of resolving this degeneracy. In this work we study the potential of the planned European LBNO experiment to distinguish between the LO and HO solutions.
Determination of the θ23 octant in long baseline neutrino experiments within and beyond the standard model
2018
The recent data indicate that the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{23}$ deviates from the maximal-mixing value of 45$^\circ$, showing two nearly degenerate solutions, one in the lower octant (LO) ($\theta_{23}45^\circ$). We investigate, using numerical simulations, the prospects for determining the octant of $\theta_{23}$ in the future long baseline oscillation experiments. We present our results as contour plots on the ($\theta_{23}-45^\circ$, $\delta$)--plane, where $\delta$ is the $CP$ phase, showing the true values of $\theta_{23}$ for which the octant can be experimentally determined at 3$\,\sigma$, 2$\,\sigma$ and 1$\,\sigma$ confidence level. In particular, we study the impact of the p…
A Coupled Solid-Fluid Method for Modeling Subduction
2007
International audience; We present a novel dynamic approach for solid/fluid coupling by joining two different numerical methods: Boundary Element Method (BEM) and Finite Element Method (FEM). FEM results describe the thermo-mechanical evolution of the solid while the fluid is solved with the BEM. The bidirectional feedback between the two domains evolves along a Lagrangian interface where the FEM domain is embedded inside the BEM domain. The feedback between the two codes is based on the calculation of a specific drag tensor for each boundary/finite element. The approach is presented here to solve the complex problem of the descent of a cold subducting oceanic plate into a hot fluid like ma…
